What is an Outdoor Rug?
An outdoor area rug is a specially designed rug, created to be used outside. Often UV treated to prevent fading, the materials used are durable, weather-proof and easy to clean.
How long should an Indoor/Outdoor rug last?
As with all rugs, proper care is key to longevity. While they are mostly weather-proof, leaving your rug out in the elements for extended periods of time will reduce the life of your rug. Store your clean rug in a dry place during the winter months to get the most out of it.
Can they be left out in the rain?
The short answer is yes. Outdoor rugs are designed to be weather resistant so the odd rain shower isn’t going to destroy it. However, if standing water is left underneath or on top of your rug, mould may appear. Follow our rug cleaning steps below and always air dry your rug to keep it looking its best.
What are the benefits of an Outdoor Area Rug?
There are many benefits, both practical and cosmetic, to adding an outdoor rug to your home.
Outdoor rugs can help to:
- Define a space such as a dining or lounge area
- Add personality and colour to your garden
- Cover up damaged paving or wood
- Give a cosy feel to balconies
- Extend the longevity of your deck
Popular Materials
Polypropylene: This synthetic fibre is the most popular in outdoor rugs, due to its durability and ease of cleaning.
PET: Created from post-consumer recycled plastic, often bottles, this material is being used more and more to make sustainable outdoor rugs.
Jute & Sisal: A natural material, the appearance is great but they are not a weather-proof option. Perfect for covered areas, these rugs cannot be left out in the rain or they will be damaged.
How to clean an Outdoor Rug?
Shake – Give your rug a quick shake to remove any dry surface dirt.
Vacuum – Dirt can gather underneath your rug so it is important to hoover both sides of the rug. Ensure it is dry before doing this and never use a Dyson vacuum on your rug.
Sweep – Sweep your rug regularly to avoid any build-up and prevent mould.
Spot Clean – Blot any liquid spills immediately with a clean, damp cloth.
Wash – Wait for a dry day to properly clean your outdoor area rug. Shake off any excess dirt first. Wet the rug all over with water. Using Woolite or a non-bio, gently clean the rug working from one end to the other. Rinse with water.
Dry – Allow your rug to air dry by hanging over a clothesline or furniture. Always ensure it is completely dry before storing away.
