Bedroom Rug Size Guide

Choosing the perfect bedroom rug is more than just picking a pattern or colour that suits your style. It's essential to understand the dimensions of your room and how the rug will function within the space.

Recommended Rug Sizes by Bed Type

Nothing creates a cosy atmosphere faster than a well-placed rug. Depending on the size of your room, there are a few placement and size options you can choose. We've outlined some size recommendations below.

King-Size Bed

For king-size beds we would recommend a rug size of at least 200 x 300cm. Larger sizes including 230x330cm and 250x350cm are popular choices as they allow the rug to sit under the entire bed and adjoining nightstands, helping to anchor the room and create a sense of harmony.

Queen Size Beds

For a queen size bed we would recommend a minimum size of 170x240cm. For a more expansive, luxurious feel a rug measuring 200x300cm is another great option; providing a soft landing for your feet in the morning.

Single Beds

For single beds, we recommend a rug or runner that measures roughly two-thirds the length of the bed. This helps to create a sense of balance, enhancing the space without overwhelming it.

Rug Placement Options

There are a number of different ways to position your bedroom rug, depending on the size of your space and the existing furniture. We've highlighted two popular options below:

Entire Bed Frame on the Rug: Placing the entire bed frame on the rug, often including bedside tables, is a great way to create a sense of cohesion. This typically requires a larger size rug but creates a luxurious and anchored look. We would recommend selecting a rug that extends roughly 60-90cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed.

Rug Placed Halfway Under the Bed: For slightly smaller bedrooms, placing the rug halfway under the bed from around the bed's midpoint can make the space appear larger and more open; providing comfort and warmth where it's most needed.

FAQs

A bedroom rug can add texture and warmth to a space, offering softness and a touch of luxury underfoot.

A bedroom rug also helps to anchor and ground existing furniture and decor, helping to centre and balance the room visually.

Step 1: Determine the Placement

Before you start measuring, decide on the rug placement based on your bedroom’s layout and size. Choose between placing the entire bed frame on the rug or having the rug halfway under the bed. Your choice will influence the measurements and the rug size you need.

Step 2: Measure the Bed

Start by measuring the dimensions of your bed. Note the length and width. This will serve as your central point of reference for the rug's dimensions.

Step 3: Decide on the Rug Coverage

  • For full coverage: plan for the rug to extend at least 60-90cm beyond the bed on all sides. This ensures ample room to step onto the rug when getting out of bed.
  • For partial coverage: if you prefer the rug starting halfway under the bed, measure the space from the midpoint of the bed to the desired endpoint beyond the foot of the bed.

If you're between sizes we'd usually recommend choosing the larger size. A bigger rug contributes significantly to the aesthetic and feel of the bedroom. It anchors the furniture, helping to centre and balance the room visually.

Before you commit to a rug, we'd always advise that you measure the space. Using newspaper or tape to map out where the rug will sit is a great way to get a better idea of how a certain rug size will look in the space.
