Measuring the Hallway
Start by measuring the length of your hallway from one end to the other. If your hallway includes doorways or transitions to other rooms, measure from the beginning of the hallway to the point just before these transitions. Next, measure the width of the hallway. Ensure there is a border of at least 10-15cm along each side of the runner so that it is visually centred.
Account for Doors and Furniture
Consider any doors, furniture or fixtures that may affect the placement of your runner rug. Open and close all doors to ensure they can move freely without catching on the rug. If you have furniture or built-in features in the hallway, ensure the runner won’t obstruct them.
Mark your Measurements
For a clearer visualisation, use masking tape to mark the intended placement of your runner rug on the floor. This step helps you see how the rug will fit within the space before purchasing.
Choosing the Right Runner Size
Whether you have a narrow corridor or a wide, expansive hallway, the right size runner will enhance the space's functionality and aesthetic appeal. Runner rugs come in various standard sizes, typically ranging from 2m to 4m in length. If your hallway has unique dimensions, or if you’re looking for something specific, made-to-measure runners or authentic Persian & Oriental runners are a great choice.
Persian & Oriental Runners
For a touch of opulence, consider Persian and Oriental runners. These hand-knotted rugs come in unique sizes, some extending up to 6m long, making them ideal for extra-long hallways. Their intricate designs and rich colours can add a luxurious feel to your home, making a bold statement in your entryway.
Custom Runners
If your hallway requires a specific size that isn’t available in standard options, custom runner sizes offer the flexibility you need. Our Tisca range, for example, includes made-to-measure wool rug and runner options available in 96 different colour ways. This range allows you to choose the perfect colour and size to fit your hallway, ensuring both style and function.
Larger Hallways
For larger hallways, a rectangular rug might be a better option than a traditional runner. Measure the available space and ensure there’s sufficient room for doors to open without obstruction. A rectangular rug can create a cohesive look and cover more floor area, adding warmth and style to the space.

When selecting a runner rug, it's essential to choose a material that can withstand heavy foot traffic. Natural fibres like wool and cotton are excellent choices due to their durability and ease of maintenance. Wool, in particular, is naturally stain-resistant and long-lasting, making it ideal for busy hallways. Polypropylene runners are also a great affordable option, offering a wide range of designs and easy maintenance.
Yes, we always recommend underlay which helps to anchor your rug, preventing your rug from moving or slipping whilst smoothing out any creases which may appear over time.
Design Tips for Hallway Runners
Selecting a hallway runner involves more than just choosing the right size; it’s about finding a design that can enhance your hallway’s aesthetics and functionality. Here are some design tips to help you choose the perfect hallway runner that reflects your style and stands up to daily wear and tear.
Opt for Patterns that Hide Dirt
Hallways are high-traffic areas, meaning your runner rug is likely to encounter dirt and wear. Choosing a design that masks dirt can help keep your hallway looking clean and fresh between deep cleans.
- Distressed patterns: these designs already have an aged look, making any additional wear blend seamlessly.
- Abstract patterns: bold, irregular designs can disguise spots and stains effectively.
- Maximalist patterns: busy, vibrant patterns with multiple colours can hide dirt and wear well.
Reflect Your Personal Style
Your hallway is the first impression guests get of your home, so it’s a great place to showcase your style and personality. Here are some ideas:
- Vibrant colours: bright and bold colours can create a welcoming and cheerful entrance.
- Subtle elegance: neutral tones and minimalist designs can offer a sleek and sophisticated look.
- Eclectic mix: combining different styles and patterns can create a unique and personalised space.
Balance the Hallway’s Aesthetics
To achieve a balanced look, consider the existing décor of your hallway. Match the runner rug with other elements like wall colours, artwork and furniture. For instance, if your hallway features a lot of bold artwork, a simpler runner might be best to avoid visual clutter. Conversely, a more subdued hallway can benefit from a vibrant runner that adds interest.
